The Plano City Council has given the green light for a new antenna structure at the AT&T headquarters, marking a significant development in the city’s landscape. The approved structure will house a stealth commercial antenna, which can be installed at any height within the sculpture, according to city documents.
Location and Design
The new sculpture will be strategically located 50 feet from Legacy Drive and 125 feet from Parkwood Boulevard. Typically, commercial antennas are required to be constructed further from streets, but the iconic nature of AT&T’s project has allowed for an exception. Christina Day, Director of Planning, emphasized that the structure has been designed to be more structurally stable due to its proximity to the street.
The headquarters is situated on the former Electronic Data Systems campus, where demolition began on May 20, as noted by Economic Development Director Michael Talley. This development is part of a broader effort to revitalize the area and enhance its economic potential.
Regulatory Compliance
Prior to the City Council’s approval, the Plano Planning and Zoning Commission had already approved the antenna structure and site plan on May 4. It is important to note that any structures exceeding 200 feet in height must receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Additionally, the new sculpture will adhere to regulations prohibiting flashing, strobing, rotating, and chasing light effects between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
