Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin set to return from IL Friday

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pittsburgh Pirates are preparing to welcome back one of their most promising young players. Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin, 20, is slated to be activated from the 60‑day injured list on Friday, just as the club opens a three‑game home series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Griffin has missed the last two months after suffering a knuckle injury to his left ring finger in early July. The injury required a splint for roughly six weeks, keeping him off the field and watching games from his phone. “It’s been driving me nuts watching the games on my phone,” Griffin told reporters on Thursday. “It’ll be fun to finally be back in there competing.”

Since making his major‑league debut on April 3, Griffin has shown why the Pirates invested heavily in him. In 59 games he is batting .276, has hit five home runs, driven in 25 runs and stolen 20 bases. He also spent time on the injured list earlier this season with a right elbow strain, demonstrating his resilience in the face of setbacks.

During his rehab, Griffin appeared in one Double‑A game in Altoona and two Triple‑A contests in Indianapolis, going 3‑for‑11 with two walks and four strikeouts. “It’s just cool to see how my body has been able to overcome these injuries,” he said. “I feel like it’s a good sign for me. I’m pumped to be back here.”

Why Griffin matters to Pittsburgh

Griffin was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft, and the Pirates signed him to a nine‑year, $140 million contract shortly after his promotion to the majors. That deal reflects the organization’s belief that he can become a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come.

His blend of speed, defensive range at shortstop, and emerging power makes him a rare talent in today’s game. For a club that has struggled to find consistent offensive production, Griffin’s ability to get on base and create runs in the leadoff spot is especially valuable.

Looking ahead

The Pirates will open the three‑game series against the Angels on Friday at PNC Park. Griffin’s return adds depth to the infield and gives manager Derek Shelton another option in the lineup. Fans in the stands will be eager to see the young shortstop’s first at‑bat after his recovery, and the team hopes his speed on the bases will spark a stronger offensive push.

While the Pirates are still working to climb out of the National League Central’s lower tier, the infusion of home‑grown talent like Griffin offers a hopeful narrative for the city’s baseball faithful. As the season progresses, keeping Griffin healthy will be a top priority for the organization, and his performance could be a key factor in the team’s push for a playoff spot later this year.
