Pirates’ offense collapses after All‑Star break but core talent remains hopeful

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered the 2026 season with modest expectations, but a scorching first half surprised many. The team posted a .768 OPS, second only to the Dodgers, and scored 516 runs, tying the Nationals for the league lead.

Mid‑season decline

Since the All‑Star break, the Pirates’ OPS has slid to .651, trailing all but the Angels. The drop of 117 points translates to a tOPS+ of 79, one of the steepest declines in modern baseball history, according to Baseball Reference.

Injuries have played a major role. Top prospect Konnor Griffin, who earned a nine‑year, $140 million extension before debuting, was sidelined by a finger ligament tear in early July. Before the injury, Griffin posted a .314/.368/.472 line (129 wRC+) and stole 16 of 17 attempts in 40 games.

Shortstop Ryan O’Hearn also missed time with a quadriceps strain, and his absence saw right‑field production dip to a .172/.280/.279 slash line (59 wRC+). Veteran Spencer Horowitz, the only 2025 batter with a wRC+ above 100, suffered a hamstring strain and a concussion, limiting him to a meager 13 wRC+ since his August return.

Bright spots amid the slump

Despite the overall downturn, several players have continued to excel. Oneil Cruz, back from a broken hand, is delivering his best season yet with a 124 wRC+, even though his strikeout rate sits at 34.7%. Brandon Lowe has found a hot streak, posting a 115 wRC+ that aligns with his career norm.

Veteran outfielder Bryan Reynolds entered the year as a top‑20 hitter (141 wRC+ at the break) and, after a brief slump, has begun to rediscover his power, suggesting a potential rebound in the final weeks.

Looking ahead

With the season’s final stretch underway, the Pirates sit at an even 100 wRC+, two games below .500 and out of playoff contention. Yet the team could finish with a net‑positive offensive group for the first time since 2014, a notable improvement over recent years.

The core of young talent—Griffin when healthy, Reynolds, and Cruz—offers a solid foundation for future success. The front office’s blend of promotions, signings and trades appears to be setting the stage for a more competitive Pittsburgh squad in the years to come.
