Pinterest Invests $4 Billion in AWS for AI-Driven Visual Discovery

Pinterest has announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), committing up to $4 billion for cloud services through 2031. This marks the largest infrastructure investment in Pinterest’s history, aimed at bolstering the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives to enhance visual search, personalization, and discovery for its more than 600 million monthly active users worldwide.

Deepening Partnership with AWS

Since 2010, Pinterest and AWS have worked together to optimize one of the largest data lakes on AWS. The new agreement further strengthens this relationship, focusing on AI model training, inference, and modernizing platform infrastructure. Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that it provides the necessary compute flexibility, hardware options, and infrastructure efficiency to advance Pinterest’s AI vision for the future of visual discovery.

Technological Advancements

Pinterest plans to expand its use of AWS custom silicon, including Trainium for large language and vision-language models, and Graviton processors, which currently power about a third of the company’s compute infrastructure. These tools will support advanced recommendation systems, multimodal models, and features like Pinterest Assistant, a conversational discovery tool.

Additionally, Pinterest will transition more of its infrastructure to a Kubernetes-based architecture on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) to enhance developer speed and operational reliability. Dave Brown, Senior Vice President of AWS Compute & ML Services, highlighted AWS’s commitment to supporting Pinterest’s teams in moving faster and thinking bigger, ultimately benefiting users worldwide.

AI Evolution and User Impact

The visual discovery platform, known for inspiring users and facilitating product shopping, has evolved its AI capabilities from traditional embedding-based retrieval to transformer-based generative models. The Taste Graph powers personalized, actionable results, offering users a diverse range of inspirations from recipes to home renovations.

This strategic investment underscores Pinterest’s commitment to leveraging AI to create a more personalized and engaging experience for its users, aligning with the broader trend of integrating advanced technology to meet consumer needs.
