Pilot lands small plane in Boca Raton ocean, walks away with minor injuries

On a sunny August day off the coast of Boca Raton, a 23‑year‑old pilot named Faith Tenkley performed an emergency water landing after her plane suffered an engine failure and a malfunctioning landing gear. The small aircraft came to rest floating in the Atlantic, prompting a rapid response from local police, fire and rescue teams.

First‑responder footage shows swift action

Body‑camera video released by the Boca Raton Police Department captures the moment officers and rescue personnel arrived on the scene by both land and boat. One responder can be heard saying, “We’re getting word that the occupant of the plane is out… everyone is okay.” Another officer later confirmed, “She’s not critical; that’s the pilot. I haven’t talked to her at all yet.”

Pilot’s account of the incident

Tenkley told Gulf Coast News she was en route to the Bahamas when the mechanical issues arose. With the landing gear not functioning properly, she made the quick decision to use the water as a runway, executing a controlled ditching that kept the aircraft largely intact.

Minimal injuries and safety precautions

Despite the dramatic circumstances, the pilot emerged with only minor scratches and bruises. Officers on the beach warned nearby swimmers and beachgoers about a small leak of jet fuel from the plane, urging them to move away from the water until the fuel was contained. “Hey guys, there will be jet fuel coming out of the plane, so if everyone can come out of the water for now,” an officer instructed.

Authorities secure the area

The scene was cordoned off as emergency crews worked to secure the aircraft, assess fuel leakage and ensure the safety of the public. No other injuries were reported, and officials confirmed that the pilot was the only occupant of the plane. WPBF is attempting to contact Tenkley’s family for further comment.

Community response

Local residents expressed admiration for the pilot’s composure and the professionalism of first responders. The incident underscores the importance of well‑trained emergency services in protecting both citizens and visitors along Florida’s coastline.
