Piggly Wiggly Five Points Grand Opening Brings Local Vendors to Tuscaloosa

The Five Points neighborhood of Tuscaloosa welcomed a major retail milestone on Friday as B&W Foods officially opened its newest Piggly Wiggly location. The store, which began serving shoppers in late September, marked the occasion with a ribbon‑cutting ceremony hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama at 11 a.m., followed by a “Dew it LOCAL” celebration that ran until 3 p.m.

Community‑focused celebration

Organizers invited more than two dozen local and regional vendors to set up tables inside the aisles, offering free samples, giveaways and in‑store promotions. Birmingham‑based Buffalo Rock co‑presented the event alongside Mountain Dew, underscoring the partnership between national brands and local businesses.

New amenities for Five Points residents

This Piggly Wiggly is B&W Foods’ sixth store in Tuscaloosa County and eighth overall, but it is the first in Tuscaloosa to feature a full‑service bakery, deli and floral department, as well as a specialty meat case that can fulfill custom orders. Tuscaloosa Drug Company is also relocating its pharmacy into the new building, adding another health resource for the neighborhood.

Local vendors showcase regional flavors

Among the vendors were well‑known regional names such as Conecuh Sausage, Milo’s Tea, Golden Flake, Little Debbie, Blue Bell, Frito‑Lay, Borden Cheese, Zeigler, Bud’s Best and Flowers Baking Co. Smaller, home‑grown businesses also took the stage, including Poppin Sister Popcorn, Rock Creek Farm Honey, Thomas Rib Shack, Gibson’s Coffee, Susie’s Cheesecakes, Sabrina’s Cakes, Jalapeños, Clark Gas Co., Mariah Bacon, Eleven86 and Hillside Orchard Farms Cider. Additional participants featured Wells, Blue Bunny Ice Cream, Entenmann’s, Sara Lee, Takis and Kretschmar.

Owner’s vision for the neighborhood

“This store represents much more than another Piggly Wiggly location. It’s an investment in the Five Points community and the people who call this neighborhood home,” said Jay Welborn, co‑owner of B&W Foods. “We want this store to be a place where our neighbors feel welcome, where local businesses can connect with customers and where partnerships continue to grow.” Welborn added that the goal is for Five Points to become more than a place to shop, emphasizing lasting relationships and active community involvement for years to come.

Looking ahead

The grand opening signals a broader commitment by B&W Foods to support local entrepreneurship and provide convenient, full‑service grocery options in West Alabama. With its expanded departments and a roster of regional vendors, the Five Points Piggly Wiggly aims to become a hub for families, faith‑centered shoppers and traditional households seeking quality products close to home.
