A pickup truck was involved in a solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Merriam, Kansas, at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday. The driver, a man in his early 20s, was found partially ejected from the vehicle with one arm pinned between the truck and the concrete median barrier.
Merriam Police Capt. Jeremiah Waters stated that the driver was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, in critical but stable condition. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, with alcohol not ruled out as a potential factor.
The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the scene to assist Merriam officers with the investigation. The northbound lanes of I-35 were closed temporarily, with traffic diverted to eastbound Johnson Drive and then to northbound Antioch Road. All lanes reopened shortly before 3 a.m.
