As tourists flock to Mallorca, Spain, a familiar problem has emerged: pickpocketing. Multiple viral videos appear to show tourists being targeted by pickpockets near Palma, the capital of Mallorca.
Protecting Valuables
According to Angel Castellanos, a California-based travel expert, criminals tend to look for people who appear distracted, overloaded with shopping bags, or less able to react quickly. Castellanos recommends using anti-theft cross-body bags and zippered front pockets to protect valuables.
Castellanos also advises travelers to stay aware of their surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas. He suggests treating these areas the same way one would any major city, enjoying the destination while remaining vigilant about valuables.
The prevalence of pickpocketing can be attributed, in part, to international tourism rebounding beyond pre-pandemic levels across much of Europe. Despite this, Castellanos encourages travelers not to let headlines discourage them from visiting Mallorca, citing it as one of Europe’s great summer destinations.
