Zack Wheeler, the Philadelphia Phillies ace, has declined an invite to the MLB All-Star Game after feeling disrespected over multiple snubs. Wheeler was not named an All-Star when the rosters were made official last weekend and was not among the replacement additions announced Tuesday.
Wheeler’s Decision
He did receive an invite Friday to join the summer showcase as an injury replacement, but he did not want to be the fifth option. Wheeler has had an All-Star-caliber season, with a 2.13 ERA and 10-1 record, despite missing the first month of the season while recovering from thoracic outlet surgery.
Wheeler’s two most recent starts have served as sharp arguments for MLB making a major mistake. He tied a career high with 14 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds and bested Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal with six shutout innings and 10 punchouts.
The All-Star Game will be played Tuesday at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia, with six of Wheeler’s teammates representing the Phillies: Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Cristopher Sanchez, Jhoan Duran, Brandon Marsh, and late addition Jesus Luzardo.
