Philadelphia Sees Rise in English Learners

Philadelphia has seen a significant increase in English learners, with around 25,000 enrolled last year, making up 22% of the district’s enrollment. However, these students are less likely to graduate than their peers, with only 70% of English learners graduating within four years, compared to 88% of non-English learners.

Challenges Faced by English Learners

English learners often struggle with balancing school and work, leading to poor attendance and increased risk of suspensions and truancy. The district has some flexible options, such as accelerated or virtual programs, but these are rarely accessible to students who are just beginning to learn English or have just started formal schooling.

Advocates and teachers are calling for more support and resources for English learners, particularly in high school. The district has expanded its newcomer academies to three schools, providing additional support and resources for students who are new to the country and learning English. However, more needs to be done to help students reach English proficiency faster and connect with the greater school community.

The district spokesperson, Monique Braxton, stated that the district remains committed to ensuring each English learner has a clear, supported pathway to graduation. The district provides training to teachers across subjects in how to work with English learners and ensures students can access high-quality curriculum and get support to meet graduation requirements.
