Philadelphia schools prioritize academics and community as they plan 17 closures

Philadelphia’s School District is launching the new school year with a three‑point plan that puts students first. Superintendent Tony Watlington highlighted the district’s focus on improving academic outcomes, strengthening customer service and deepening community relationships as more than 100,000 students returned to classrooms.

Positive signs in the first week

Watlington described the opening week as a visual reminder of progress: “clean schools, good‑looking grounds, shiny floors and lots of smiling faces.” He said the district’s staff are working to keep that momentum throughout the year.

School‑closure plan moves forward

The district is moving ahead with a plan to close 17 schools beginning in the 2027‑28 academic year. The closures are driven by uneven enrollment patterns – some schools have many vacant seats while others are “bursting at the seams.” Watlington acknowledged the controversy but stressed the necessity of the plan to use resources efficiently.

To help families affected by the closures, the district formed a transition team over the summer. The team will provide “red‑carpet, white‑glove treatment” to ensure families remain in the public‑school system and have access to the support they need.

Kensington High School remains closed

Kensington High School continues to be closed indefinitely due to an asbestos issue. Students are being bused to a high school in Mayfair while remediation work proceeds. Watlington said there is no set timeline for reopening and that the district will take “as much time as needed to do it right and do it well.”

Testing data delay creates enrollment hurdle

Some families are still waiting for school‑selection decisions because the Pennsylvania Department of Education has not released last year’s PSSA and Keystone exam scores. Those scores are required for applications to criteria‑based schools. Watlington said the district is developing a workaround and expects to announce details next week.

Vaccination monitoring as kindergarten starts

As kindergarten classes begin, the district is closely tracking vaccination rates, especially for measles. While no immediate concerns have been reported, officials are monitoring the situation and have scheduled a vaccine clinic for the week. Health officials note that a 95% vaccination rate is needed to prevent outbreaks.

Looking ahead

Watlington emphasized that the district’s priorities remain steady: better academic performance, responsive service and stronger ties with families and neighborhoods. By addressing enrollment imbalances, supporting families through school closures, and maintaining health vigilance, the district aims to create a stable, thriving environment for Philadelphia’s students.
