Philadelphia – A local nonprofit is turning empty dorm rooms into personalized living spaces for incoming college freshmen. The Style My Dorm program, run by Youth Enrichment Programs, selected 14 students from the Philadelphia area this semester based on financial need, academic standing and scholastic achievement.
How the program works
Founder Tonya Rose Davis explained that the effort “focuses on supporting students who may be financially challenged as they begin college.” Volunteers gather furniture, décor and essential supplies from a Philadelphia warehouse and deliver fully furnished rooms to each scholar. Davis, who launched the initiative in 2022 after recalling her own experience of feeling “poor” when she first saw a roommate’s well‑appointed side of a dorm, initially funded the project herself. This year she raised additional donations to expand the reach.
Student impact
Recipients say the makeovers ease the transition to campus life. “Style My Dorm really helped because I feel safe. I feel happy,” said Sophia Bass, a freshman at Hampton University. For many, the newly styled space is the first place they have called their own away from home.
Volunteer perspective
Volunteers describe the reveal as the most rewarding part of the process. “We love to see the expressions on the scholars’ faces when they get that reveal,” said Inez Rickards, a longtime volunteer with Style My Dorm. “For some of them, this is their first time being away from home and seeing that, and experiencing it, that’s what it’s all about.”
Program growth
Since its inception, the initiative has styled 24 dorm rooms, with 14 completed this year alone. Davis plans to continue expanding the program to reach more students in need, emphasizing the link between a comfortable living environment and academic confidence.
Community support
The effort reflects a broader tradition of Philadelphia nonprofits stepping in to fill gaps left by rising college costs. By providing essential furnishings and a sense of belonging, Style My Dorm aligns with the city’s long‑standing commitment to youth enrichment and family support.
