Philadelphia is celebrating America’s 250th birthday with the reopening of historic sites and the introduction of new attractions. The Garden at City Tavern, a summer pop-up, has reopened with a beautiful park-like setting featuring lite bites, canned cocktails, and mocktails. Visitors can also meet historic interpreters portraying real people from the past.
Historic Sites Reopen
The First Bank of the United States has undergone a $40 million renovation and is now open to visitors. The bank’s grand building opened in 1797 and began a long tradition of the federal government asserting its power through monumental architecture. The National Park Service took it over in the 1950s and made it the first visitors center, until closing it in 1976.
Historic Philadelphia, Inc. and the Independence National Historical Park have partnered to reinvent the garden behind City Tavern into a welcoming new destination for food and drink. The garden is open for the summer and features colonial games like cornhole.
New Attractions
A new French Moroccan restaurant, Soufiane at the Morris, has opened in Center City. The restaurant is located in a historic building that dates back to 1787 and offers a unique dining experience with a scenic courtyard and traditional Moroccan cuisine.
Meena Davi Chandrasekaran is turning beads, pearls, and gold into meaningful handmade jewelry through her business, Janaki Mosaic Arts. Jamel Workman has been a master barber for 20 years and a custom hatmaker for the last 12, with his shop located in West Philly.
