Pete Buttigieg is the US Secretary of Transportation and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He was born on January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana, to Joseph A. Buttigieg, an English professor, and Anne Montgomery, a linguist.
Early Life and Education
Buttigieg graduated from Harvard College in 2004 with a B.A. in History and Literature. He then attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, graduating in 2007. He also served in the US Navy Reserves from 2009 to 2017, reaching the rank of Lieutenant.
Buttigieg is married to Chasten Glezman, and they have adopted twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August. He is an Episcopalian and is the first Senate-confirmed LGBTQ Cabinet secretary.
Career
Buttigieg worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Chicago from 2007 to 2010. He then served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, from 2012 to 2020. During his tenure, he implemented various initiatives, including the Vacant & Abandoned Properties Task Force Report, which aimed to address 1,000 abandoned houses in 1,000 days.
In 2019, Buttigieg announced his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Although he did not win the nomination, he later endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president. In 2020, Biden nominated Buttigieg as his Secretary of Transportation, and he was confirmed by the Senate in February 2021.
