Pentagon Revises Religious Affiliation List After Concerns from Mormon Lawmakers

The Pentagon has revised its list of recognized religious affiliations for service members following concerns raised by Mormon lawmakers. The initial list, which categorized 31 religious affiliations, had not identified the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Christian, sparking criticism from prominent figures such as Sen. Mike Lee of Utah.

Response to Lawmakers’ Concerns

Senator Lee, a well-known supporter of former President Trump, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Pentagon’s classification, emphasizing the importance of recognizing all faiths that profess belief in Jesus Christ as Christian. He highlighted that the omission was not only offensive to members of his faith but also contrary to the principles of religious neutrality that the government should uphold.

Representative Mike Kennedy, also from Utah, echoed Lee’s sentiments, calling for a correction to the list. In response, the Pentagon released an updated version that removed the ‘Christian’ identifier from various denominations, aiming to avoid theological disputes.

Efforts to Streamline Religious Codes

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been leading efforts to overhaul the military’s chaplain corps, which he believes has been undermined in recent years. The changes to the religious codes are part of a broader initiative to provide chaplains with clear and practical information to better serve service members’ spiritual needs.

Hegseth noted that the previous system had expanded to over 200 faith codes, which he described as impractical. The revised list of 31 codes is intended to simplify the process and ensure that chaplains can effectively minister to service members according to their faith backgrounds.

Senator Lee expressed gratitude for the Pentagon’s swift action in addressing the issue, acknowledging the importance of respecting sincerely-held religious beliefs within the military ranks.
