Pennsylvania teen’s football injury reveals B‑cell leukemia diagnosis

Six‑year veteran of high school football Dane Simmons, a 16‑year‑old junior from Pennsylvania, never imagined a routine game could uncover a life‑changing diagnosis. During the season‑opening match on Aug. 28, Simmons was tackled early in the first quarter, fell to the turf and was quickly taken off on a stretcher.

From the field to the hospital

Coach Thomas Paulone Jr., head coach of the Jeannette High School Jayhawks, recalled the moment the stretcher arrived: “Any time a stretcher comes out, the whole stadium stops. We care about our players first as people.” Simmons was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with a suspected head and spinal injury.

After a thorough evaluation, doctors cleared him of any traumatic injury. However, routine blood work revealed an unexpected finding: B‑cell leukemia, a form of blood cancer.

Impact on the player and his family

“It was crazy. I’m not supposed to be at the hospital for cancer; I’m supposed to be there for a football injury,” Simmons said. His mother confirmed that doctors anticipate a treatment course lasting about two and a half years, including chemotherapy and ongoing monitoring.

During his stay, Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, who happened to be visiting the hospital, stopped by to offer encouragement. The support extended beyond the stadium; teammates, classmates and strangers reached out with messages of hope.

Community response

Upon his discharge, Simmons returned home and was greeted by a special reunion at practice. Teammates wore his #60 jersey on their helmets as a tribute, and the team held a brief ceremony to honor his courage.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover medical expenses, reflecting the community’s commitment to easing the financial burden of his treatment.

Looking ahead

While Simmons will miss the remainder of the season, he remains optimistic about returning for his senior year. “I’m hopeful I’ll be back in my #60 jersey next season,” he said.

His story underscores the importance of early medical screening and the profound role of faith, family and community in navigating serious health challenges. Local churches and faith‑based groups have offered prayers and support, reinforcing the town’s commitment to caring for one of its own.
