Penn State sexual abuse scandal: timeline of key events and investigations

The Penn State sexual abuse scandal continues to dominate national headlines as new details emerge about the decades‑long abuse perpetrated by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Below is a straightforward timeline of the most significant events, court actions and organizational responses.

Early investigations and allegations (1998‑2002)

In 1998, Penn State police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare investigated a report that a mother claimed Sandusky had showered with her 11‑year‑old son. Psychologist Alycia Chambers warned that Sandusky’s behavior resembled that of a pedophile, while another psychologist, John Seasock, found no indication of abuse. On June 1, 1998, Sandusky admitted in an interview that he had showered naked with the boy, called the act wrong and promised not to repeat it. District attorneys declined to file charges and the university police closed the case.

In June 1999, Sandusky retired after 32 years at Penn State but retained emeritus status, giving him unrestricted campus access. In 2000, a janitor reported witnessing Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in the Lasch Building showers, yet no report was made to university officials or law enforcement.

On March 2, 2002, graduate assistant Mike McQueary told Coach Joe Paterno he had seen Sandusky sexually assault a 10‑year‑old boy in the same shower facility. The following day, McQueary reported the incident to Athletic Director Tim Curley. Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz later testified they were not told of any such allegation, and no law‑enforcement investigation was launched.

Escalation and legal actions (2005‑2011)

Between 2005 and 2007, Sandusky deepened his relationship with a Second Mile participant, eventually performing oral sex on the boy more than 20 times. In November 2008, after the boy’s mother reported assault, the school principal barred Sandusky from campus and the police documented 118 calls from Sandusky’s numbers to the boy’s home.

On November 4, 2011, a grand‑jury report was released, detailing Sandusky’s abuse of at least eight boys over a 15‑year span. The next day, Sandusky was arraigned on 40 criminal counts and released on $100,000 bail. Athletic Director Tim Curley and Gary Schultz each faced one count of felony perjury and one count of failure to report abuse.

University President Graham Spanier and Coach Paterno were dismissed on November 9, 2011. On November 14, Sandusky told NBC’s Bob Costas he was “innocent” and claimed his only wrongdoing was “showering with those kids.”

Trials, convictions and organizational fallout (2012‑2016)

Sandusky was found guilty on multiple child‑rape charges in 2012 and sentenced to prison. The Second Mile, the charity Sandusky founded in 1977, sought court approval in May 2012 to transfer its programs to Arrow Child & Family Ministries and later requested a stay to allow pending victim claims to be resolved. By March 2016, after asset distribution and escrow arrangements with the Pennsylvania Attorney General, The Second Mile was formally dissolved.

Throughout the process, independent investigations were launched, including a review led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh. Numerous lawsuits were filed on behalf of victims, with one plaintiff alleging over one hundred instances of abuse.

Key takeaways

The Penn State scandal underscores the critical importance of transparent reporting, swift law‑enforcement involvement, and robust safeguarding policies within educational and charitable institutions. While the criminal convictions have provided some measure of justice, the extensive timeline reveals missed opportunities to protect vulnerable children and hold accountable those who failed to act.

Community leaders, faith‑based groups and families continue to call for stronger oversight and preventative measures to ensure that similar tragedies are not repeated.
