Pedestrian killed after vehicle strike on I-395 in Alexandria

A tragic traffic incident occurred on Monday night on Interstate 395 southbound, just north of Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia. At approximately 8:29 p.m., a vehicle struck a pedestrian on the highway’s left shoulder.

Virginia State Police troopers quickly located the injured pedestrian and administered life‑saving measures. Despite their efforts, the victim died from the injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the vehicle stopped a short distance down the road and called 911, remaining at the scene while authorities began their investigation. State police have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.

Investigation ongoing

Police officials said the cause and circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. No further details about vehicle speed, road conditions, or potential contributing factors have been released at this time.

Local officials typically remind motorists to exercise caution, especially on high‑speed corridors like I‑395, and to remain vigilant for pedestrians who may be walking near or on the roadway. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) regularly monitors traffic safety on major interstates and works with law‑enforcement agencies to address hazardous conditions.

Community response

The Alexandria community has expressed sorrow over the loss of life. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about traffic safety initiatives and to report any unsafe conditions they observe on local roadways.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Virginia State Police at the number provided in the official report.

Safety reminders

Virginia State Police and VDOT recommend the following safety measures for drivers and pedestrians alike:

  • Reduce speed in areas where pedestrians may be present.
  • Stay alert for unexpected movements on the shoulder or nearby sidewalks.
  • Avoid distractions such as mobile devices while driving.
  • Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks and remain visible, especially at night.

Authorities will continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and will release additional information as it becomes available.
