Pedal, Picnic, and Pause: A Perfect Day on the George Bush Park Trail at Carrollton’s Josey Ranch Area

There is a particular kind of afternoon that North Texas does better than almost anywhere else — the kind where the sky turns that impossible shade of blue, a breeze comes in from the northwest, and suddenly every excuse you had to stay indoors evaporates. That is exactly the afternoon Carrollton’s Josey Ranch Lake Trail System was made for.

Tucked into the western edge of Carrollton near Josey Lane and Keller Springs Road, this trail network winds around the shimmering surface of Josey Ranch Lake and connects into a broader greenbelt corridor that most people — even longtime Carrollton residents — have never fully explored. The main loop around the lake runs roughly two miles, paved and well-maintained, making it equally welcoming to joggers, cyclists, stroller-pushing parents, and anyone who simply wants a long, unhurried walk with a decent view. But venture out along the creek-side connector paths and you will find quieter stretches where the city noise drops away almost entirely and the only sounds are grackles arguing in the pecans overhead.

What makes this trail genuinely special is its layered character. At the lake itself, you get open sky and broad water views — a legitimate visual exhale after a week spent staring at screens. Fishing platforms jut out over the water at intervals, and on any given weekend morning you will find families with folding chairs and tackle boxes making a full morning of it. The trail surface is wide enough that foot traffic and cyclists coexist without drama, and there are clearly marked crossings at the busier road intersections.

Move further along the greenbelt connectors and the mood shifts. The canopy fills in, the path narrows slightly, and you are suddenly walking through something that feels much wilder than a suburban trail has any right to feel. Great blue herons are a near-daily sighting along the creek margins. In spring, the wildflower strips alongside the path bloom in earnest — bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and Mexican hat competing for your attention in the best possible way.

For practical purposes: parking is available at the Josey Ranch Lake Park lot off Keller Springs, and the trailheads are clearly signed. There are restroom facilities and covered picnic shelters near the lake, so packing a lunch is genuinely worth doing. Morning visits are cooler and tend to attract more wildlife; late afternoon brings golden light that makes the lake surface look like hammered copper.

Carrollton has no shortage of parks, but this trail system rewards the visitor who takes time to go further than the first bench. Bring good shoes, a full water bottle, and no particular agenda. The trail will handle the rest.
