FORT WAYNE, Indiana – PBS Fort Wayne is set to air its first‑ever State of the Station broadcast on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. on channel 39.1, with a repeat the following afternoon. The special program will give viewers a behind‑the‑scenes look at how the station has reshaped its operations after losing state and federal public‑media support.
Funding cuts and a leaner operation
President and CEO Ed Leon explained that the loss of Indiana state funding and federal public‑media dollars cost the station nearly $1.4 million, roughly 43 % of its annual revenue. In response, PBS Fort Wayne restructured its operations, trimming expenses and reducing staff to a core team of 14 full‑time employees supplemented by a freelance studio crew.
Community‑funded model gains momentum
Despite the financial hit, the station now operates as a fully community‑funded public‑media outlet, relying on viewers, local sponsors and philanthropic partners. Membership revenue rose 15 % over the past year, while major gifts of $1,000 or more increased 69 %, signaling strong local support for the station’s mission.
New arts initiative and local programming
The broadcast will also spotlight Arts (260), a two‑year initiative funded by a READI 2.0 Arts & Culture Grant. The program will back original performances, cultural documentaries, workforce‑development opportunities and a Documentarian in Residence, as well as a Northeast Indiana Creative Innovation Business Incubator in partnership with the Northeast Indiana Innovation Community.
PBS Fort Wayne continues to produce a slate of locally focused shows, including “The 260,” “PrimeTime,” “Matters of the Mind,” “Life Ahead,” “HealthLine” and “Pet Life.” A documentary on television pioneer Philo T. Farnsworth is also in production.
Looking ahead
Leon emphasized that the station’s future plans center on deepening community engagement, expanding educational content, and leveraging local partnerships to sustain high‑quality programming. Viewers can learn more about upcoming projects and how to support the station at pbsfortwayne.org.
