The New England Patriots are set to face the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. With head coach Mike Vrabel announcing that Drake Maye will not play, the focus will shift to other players, including quarterback Tommy DeVito.
Quarterback Spotlight
DeVito, who hasn’t played in a regular-season game since Week 15 of the 2024 season, will likely see significant playing time. As the primary backup, he’ll be one snap away from being thrust into action this season. DeVito looked solid during Tuesday’s joint practice, hitting Mack Hollins for a long touchdown strike on the second unit’s first play in the final 11-on-11 session.
The Patriots’ depth chart at wide receiver is also a story arc to watch. A.J. Brown is the obvious No. 1, and free-agent addition Romeo Doubs figures to be the No. 2. After that, there are several options, including DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Efton Chism, Kyle Williams, and Kayshon Boutte.
Defensive Backfield
Christian Gonzalez didn’t practice on Tuesday and won’t play in the game, while Carlton Davis is still working his way back from an injury. This leaves opportunities for other cornerbacks, including rookie Karon Prunty, veteran Kindle Vildor, and undrafted rookie Chaning Canada.
The Patriots’ pass-rushing needs will also be a focus, with Harold Landry not in the picture and Dre’Mont Jones, rookie Gabe Jacas, and second-year player Elijah Ponder shouldering the load. Other players, such as Bradyn Swinson and Quintayvious Hutchins, may also emerge to help the pass-rushing cause.
Special Teams
The Patriots’ special teams unit, including kicker Andy Borregales and punter Bryce Baringer, will also be under scrutiny. Borregales proved reliable as a rookie, but kickers always have to prove themselves. The punting unit, with long snappers Julian Ashby and Niko Lalos, will also be watched closely.
