Pasco County, Fla. – A paddleboarding trip turned into an emergency when two people were swept away from the shore, triggering a multi-agency water rescue in Pasco County.
Rescue Efforts
On June 16, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, New Port Richey Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the U.S. Coast Guard all responded to a distress call regarding the stranded paddlers. The individuals had been carried out by the current and were unable to make it back to land on their own.
The breakthrough came from the air. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit quickly spotted the two individuals from above and maintained visual contact while coordinating directly with boat crews on the water. Following those coordinates, the New Port Richey Police Marine Unit arrived on the scene and successfully brought both paddleboarders aboard.
The responding agencies credited the quick outcome to tight teamwork. In a statement following the operation, officials noted, “This rescue highlights the importance of rapid response and seamless coordination amongst local agencies. We are grateful for these strong partnerships that help keep Pasco County safe.”
Both individuals were returned to safety without further incident.
