Paris’s historic maid rooms face heat-driven demise

Under the iconic Haussmannian rooftops of Paris, the city’s cheapest rental spaces – the historic chambres de bonne or maid’s rooms – are disappearing. Built two centuries ago to house servants, these nine‑square‑meter studios have long served generations of students and budget‑conscious travelers seeking a central location.

Heat makes the rooms untenable

A 2024 study by the Paris Atelier of Urbanism (APUR) found that top‑floor apartments without proper solar protection can become up to 10 °C hotter than the outside air. With heatwaves regularly reaching 40 °C (100 °F), the cramped rooms are becoming intolerable, and experts warn they may soon be illegal to rent.

Students still cling to the bargain

Twenty‑three‑year‑old Russian student Anatoly Novikov lives in a nine‑square‑meter room in the affluent Notre‑dame‑des‑Champs district, paying €700 a month for a space the size of a parking spot. He says the location outweighs the discomfort, calling the experience a “cool authentic student experience.”

Twenty‑four‑year‑old Bilal Guénanain, from Brittany, pays €550 a month for a similar room near the Champs‑Élysées, enduring six flights of stairs each day. Both view the sacrifice as part of the adventure of living in Paris.

Historical and cultural backdrop

These rooms have housed artists, writers and travelers since the 19th‑century Grand Tour. Victor Hugo once lived in a tiny attic in 1821, an experience that is believed to have influenced his description of Marius’s dwelling in Les Misérables. Today, about 55,000 people across the Paris region still reside in such converted service rooms.

Climate change threatens a legacy

France recorded a record number of heat‑related deaths this summer, with the Paris region hardest hit. Experts like Dominique Naert, director of the energy‑efficient renovation program at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, warn that the lack of insulation and ventilation could make these spaces unsafe for occupants, especially the elderly who also live there.

Urban planners and heritage officials are debating how to retrofit the historic facades while preserving the city’s architectural character. No concrete solution has emerged yet, leaving the future of these affordable dwellings uncertain.

What’s next for low‑cost housing?

With student enrollment in Paris up 30 % over the past two decades and housing costs soaring, the loss of chambres de bonne could exacerbate the city’s affordability crisis. Policymakers, architects and community advocates are urged to find alternatives before the rooms become a relic of the past.
