Paramount rebukes Mark Ruffalo for using antisemitic language in Warner Bros. Discovery merger debate

Paramount Pictures issued a public statement on Saturday responding to actor Mark Ruffalo’s recent social‑media comments about the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Ruffalo, who is known for his role in the Marvel franchise, referenced the Israel‑Gaza conflict and used language the studio described as invoking antisemitic tropes.

Paramount’s response

According to a spokesperson quoted by Variety, Paramount said it is “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.” The company added that words such as “genocide” and “apartheid,” when applied to a corporate transaction, are “not just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe.” Paramount emphasized that it does not tolerate prejudice of any kind against anyone.

Comments from media watchdogs

Curtis Houck, managing editor at the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters, told Fox News Digital that Paramount was “absolutely right to respond to this actual, serious anti‑Semitic smear.” Houck suggested that the left often labels criticism of figures like George Soros as antisemitism, but argued that Ruffalo’s remarks about Oracle’s involvement with Israel warranted the response.

Ruffalo’s Instagram post

In his Instagram post, Ruffalo described Oracle as “the company that Larry Ellison is using to fund his son David’s Warner Bros acquisition.” He referenced a video of Paramount board member Safra Catz discussing “really profoundly scary technologies” that Oracle allegedly supplied to the Israeli military after the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. Ruffalo warned that such technologies could be merged into a large media conglomerate and eventually be used on the public.

Ruffalo also labeled Oracle founder Larry Ellison a “classic oligarch,” arguing that the merger would further concentrate wealth and influence among a small group of elites. He claimed the transaction could eliminate 4,500 filmmaking jobs and another 10,000 related positions, citing a lawsuit filed by twelve state attorneys general seeking to block the deal.

Legal and regulatory backdrop

The merger has drawn scrutiny from state attorneys general who argue that the combination could reduce competition in the media market and harm workers. The lawsuit alleges that the deal would give the combined entity excessive control over content distribution and advertising revenue, potentially violating antitrust laws.

Paramount’s statement did not address the antitrust claims directly, focusing instead on the language used by Ruffalo. The studio reiterated its commitment to a respectful discourse and said it would continue to evaluate the merger on its business merits.

Industry reaction

Industry observers note that the merger, if completed, would create one of the world’s largest media companies, combining Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive content library with Oracle’s cloud and data‑analytics capabilities. Critics argue that such consolidation could limit diversity of voices and increase the power of a few tech‑media conglomerates.

Supporters contend that the partnership could drive innovation in content delivery and provide new tools for creators. The debate reflects broader tensions in the media sector over the role of large technology firms in shaping public discourse.

What’s next?

The merger remains under review by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. Both agencies have indicated they will closely examine the potential competitive impacts. Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have not announced a timeline for a final decision.

Mark Ruffalo has not responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital. Paramount also declined further comment at this time.
