Pam Bondi Testifies on Epstein Files, Avoids Trump Questions

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared before the House Oversight Committee to discuss the release of the Jeffrey Epstein case files. Bondi, who has been a central figure in the political controversy surrounding the files, refused to answer questions regarding President Donald Trump’s involvement in the process. Her testimony was part of a closed-door interview on Capitol Hill.

Bondi’s Testimony and Legal Context

Bondi maintained that the Trump administration had delivered justice and transparency in the matter, as directed by President Trump. She emphasized that the release of the Epstein files was overseen by then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, now acting attorney general, under the Epstein Files Transparency Act signed by Trump. Bondi acknowledged redaction errors but defended the Justice Department’s efforts as compliant with the law.

Democratic lawmakers expressed frustration with Bondi’s refusal to discuss Trump’s knowledge of Epstein’s crimes before they became public. Bondi, consulting with a Department of Justice lawyer, cited her voluntary appearance as a reason to decline certain questions. Harmeet Dhillon, a top DOJ official, was present during the interview, which some Democrats criticized as a conflict of interest.

Survivors and Congressional Reactions

Outside the Capitol, survivors of Epstein’s abuse gathered, urging lawmakers to hold Bondi accountable for the mishandling of the files, which included personal information of potential victims. Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky assured them of his commitment to justice for the survivors.

Bondi’s involvement in the Epstein case has been contentious, particularly after the delayed release of the files and the inclusion of sensitive information. Her departure from the Justice Department raised questions about the enforcement of a congressional subpoena, leading to her agreement to a transcribed interview rather than a sworn deposition.

The House Oversight Committee continues its investigation into Epstein, spanning multiple administrations. Despite the political tensions, Comer stated that Bondi could face prosecution if she lies to Congress, and the committee plans to release a transcript of her interview.
