Palm Beach County launches “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign to curb illegal gun purchases

Palm Beach County gun retailers are at the forefront of a new public‑safety push aimed at stopping illegal firearm purchases. The “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign, a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Department of Justice and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), seeks to educate both the public and licensed dealers about the severe penalties for so‑called straw purchases.

What is a straw purchase?

A straw purchase occurs when an individual buys a firearm on behalf of someone who is legally barred from owning one. The buyer signs the federal background‑check form for the prohibited person, effectively lying to the government. Under federal law, that act is a felony.

Federal penalties are steep

U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones warned that a person who falsifies the background‑check form faces up to 15 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. “More importantly, what you’re doing is helping people who should not have firearms get them,” he said.

Retailers as the first line of defense

“Local firearm retailers around the Palm Beach area and Florida are literally the first line of defense against these types of illegal purchases,” said Joe Bartozzi, president and CEO of the NSSF. The campaign will provide dealers with training on how to spot red flags, verify buyer intent and refuse transactions that appear suspicious.

Broad outreach across the county

Over the next month the initiative will feature 17 billboards and roadside displays, more than 1,200 radio spots and a flood of targeted social‑media and mobile ads. The messaging emphasizes personal responsibility and the long‑term consequences of a single dishonest decision.

Operation Hurricane laid the groundwork

The current effort builds on the ATF’s earlier Operation Hurricane, which seized 94 weapons, charged 46‑47 defendants and uncovered a suspect linked to a murder investigation. Reding Quiñones highlighted those results as proof that proactive enforcement can disrupt illegal gun networks.

Gifts and legal alternatives

Retailers also addressed a common question: can a firearm be given as a gift? They explained that the process can become legally complex and suggested purchasing a gift card instead of transferring the weapon directly, thereby avoiding inadvertent violations.

Why the campaign matters to families

For parents and community members, the message is clear: protecting children and neighborhoods starts with obeying the law. By preventing prohibited individuals from obtaining firearms, the county reduces the risk of violent crime and safeguards the sanctity of the home.

Looking ahead

The campaign will continue through the fall, with additional educational workshops for dealers and community groups. Officials hope that heightened awareness will deter straw purchases before they happen, reinforcing Palm Beach County’s commitment to safety, personal responsibility and the rule of law.
