Security concerns rise after name change
County Legislative Affairs Director Alessandro Marchesani told the Palm Beach County Commission that, from January 1 through early August, the airport received over 5,000 security threats. Of those, 46 were deemed credible enough for law‑enforcement investigation. “Since the name change, we have received over 5,000 security threats at the airport. Forty‑six have been determined to be credible for law enforcement to investigate,” Marchesani said during the meeting.
County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo added that, to date, law‑enforcement has not classified any of the communications as an imminent threat. “As of today, the County has not been advised by law enforcement that any of those communications has been determined to constitute a credible threat,” he said.
Officials outline security upgrades
In response to the heightened alert level, officials outlined a series of infrastructure improvements. Marchesani said the county is working on better fencing, additional cameras, and reinforced bollards to protect the runway and terminal areas. “There has been a need for security improvements at the airport in terms of fencing, cameras, bollards, comprehensive security improvements, and we’re also working on that,” he explained.
Airport officials declined to disclose specific details about the upgrades, funding sources, or timelines, but emphasized that passenger safety remains the top priority. “The safety and security of our passengers, employees, and airport facilities remain our highest priority,” Abruzzo affirmed.
Community reactions
Local residents voiced mixed opinions at the commission hearing. Glen Whittaker, a visitor from New York, acknowledged the political climate but stressed the practical purpose of the airport. “Obviously you know we live in a politically charged environment, so I can see and understand some people’s perspective on the name change,” Whittaker said. “But as you know, just using the airport, it’s an airport, so I just want to use it, land safely, get through security, and go where I’m going.”
Port St. Lucie resident Debbie Brothers expressed a more measured view, suggesting that extra security might be warranted only when the President is traveling. “I think possibly when the president is flying in, they may need the extra security, but other than that, I really, I don’t see any reason for it,” she said.
