The trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, accused of starting the Palisades Fire, has begun. Prosecutors presented surveillance footage and witness testimony to argue that Rinderknecht intentionally sparked the blaze.
Prosecution’s Case
Prosecutors claim that Rinderknecht was angry at the world and wanted revenge. They presented evidence of his fascination with fire, including his queries to ChatGPT about fire and his treatment of the AI chatbot like a diary.
Witnesses testified about their interactions with Rinderknecht while he worked as an Uber driver. They described him as irritable and enraged, and said he drove recklessly fast.
Defense’s Argument
Rinderknecht’s attorney, Steve Haney, argued that there’s no reliable evidence that his client started the fire. He pointed out that Rinderknecht called 911 multiple times when he saw the flames and tried to stop the fire.
Haney also emphasized that Rinderknecht was at the Hidden Buddha location to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks and did not see or hear any fireworks in the area.
