Page High School community honors 15‑year‑old football player Davion Fewell

Hundreds of family members, friends, teammates and neighbors assembled at Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, to celebrate the life of Davion Fewell, a 15‑year‑old junior varsity football player who died last week from a fatal head injury sustained during a game.

Faith and family bring comfort

Davion’s grandfather, Lenwood Brooks, spoke of the role prayer and unity have played for the family during this painful time. “I’m so glad to have been his paw paw for 15 years,” Brooks said, adding that the family is “trying to make it through, prayer, sticking together, loving one another.” He described his grandson as a young man of few words who could lift the spirits of anyone who was down.

Coaches and teammates remember his determination

Coaches highlighted Davion’s work ethic, noting that “no matter if he was doing the workout right or wrong, he gave it his all; he was determined to do it right.” A teammate recalled their last conversation, saying, “We said ‘I love you,’ bro; I really wish I could hear that again.” The teammate also expressed hope that Davion could have been on the field when Page Pirates chase the Southern Guilford Storm for the state championship.

Community tribute

Attendees released balloons and blew out candles in a moving tribute. Brooks shared a message of resilience inspired by Davion: “Today I may be down, and somebody will pick me up; tomorrow somebody else is down, and I got to pick them up, and this is just how you get through it.”

Support from the “A Son Never Forgets” Foundation

The foundation, started by NFL player D.J. Reader, stepped forward to cover burial expenses for the young athlete, providing financial assistance to the family as they arrange final services.

Looking ahead

While the community mourns, the Page Pirates will take the field Friday against the Southern Guilford Storm, carrying Davion’s memory with them. The gathering underscored the strength of faith, family and community in the face of tragedy, reflecting the values that bind Greensboro’s residents together.
