Pa. Rep. David Maloney urges President Trump to rename Lake Erie as “Lake Pennsylvania”

State Rep. David Maloney, a Republican representing Pennsylvania’s 117th district, announced a new resolution that calls on President Donald Trump, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and members of Congress to rename Lake Erie to “Lake Pennsylvania.” Maloney says the Great Lake is a vital part of the Commonwealth’s economy and cultural heritage, and that the name should reflect its modern identity.

Why the name change matters to Pennsylvania

“This is Pennsylvania’s only Great Lake. Its modern economy and identity are increasingly tied to the boaters, anglers, families and tourists who come to enjoy it,” Maloney said in a statement. “Ohio has plenty of shoreline. New York already has two Great Lakes. Canada has four others. Pennsylvania has one. Let’s call it Lake Pennsylvania!”

Background on recent federal renaming efforts

The proposal follows President Trump’s recent executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The order applies only to U.S. federal agencies, meaning that Canadian authorities and most international bodies continue to use the historic name. Apple Maps and Google Maps have already updated the label for U.S. users, but the change is not recognized outside the United States.

Trump has also floated similar ideas for other geographic features, including renaming New Mexico “New America,” and even suggesting new names for the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Earlier in his term, he signed an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America,” a change that likewise only affects federal maps and agencies.

Local reaction and broader implications

While the resolution is largely symbolic, it underscores a growing trend among some state leaders to assert a more assertive national identity through place‑names. Critics argue that such changes can cause confusion for residents, businesses, and tourists, and may strain relationships with neighboring states and Canada.

Supporters, however, contend that the renaming would boost state pride and highlight Pennsylvania’s unique contribution to the Great Lakes region. The lake’s watershed supports roughly 12 million people, with about 10.5 million residing in the United States and 1.9 million in Canada, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Next steps for the resolution

Maloney’s resolution will be referred to the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee for review. If approved, it could be forwarded to the state Senate and ultimately to the governor’s desk for endorsement before being presented to the federal administration.

Regardless of the outcome, the effort illustrates how state legislators are using symbolic actions to reinforce local identity and support the Trump administration’s broader agenda of rebranding American landmarks.
