Ozark is on the brink of adopting a comprehensive 10-year master plan designed to revitalize its park system, with a strong emphasis on enhancing access to the Finley River and improving connectivity between local parks. This initiative, which has been shaped by community feedback gathered through public meetings and an online survey, aims to transform the city’s green spaces into more accessible and enjoyable areas for residents and visitors alike.
Community-Driven Park Enhancements
The proposed plan, developed in partnership with SWT Design, includes significant changes to Finley River Park. The old ball fields are set to be removed, reimagining the area as a destination for special events and river activities. The plan highlights improved parking facilities, better pedestrian circulation, and expanded green spaces for gatherings, all aimed at fostering a stronger connection to the river.
Ozark’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Hayden Ponsar, noted that while practice fields might be included in future developments, the primary focus is on enhancing river access and creating more river overlooks. This aligns with the community’s desire for better interaction with the natural environment.
Improving River and Forest Accessibility
The master plan also suggests enhancing river access points at Finley River and Riverside Inn parks. This could involve creating a designated beach or sand bar area at Riverside Inn Park and adding new river access at Bluff Spring Park. Jay Wohlschlaeger, Managing Partner at SWT, emphasized the importance of providing access that residents currently lack, allowing for activities like floating or kayaking between parks.
Efforts to protect the river and its edges are also a priority. The plan recommends relocating existing trails at Finley River Park further from the waterway and implementing landscaping to preserve the riverbank. Additionally, a proposed “blueway” trail would connect the Finley River, Riverside Inn, and Bluff Spring parks, enhancing the overall trail network.
Preserving and Developing Community Spaces
Over the next decade, Ozark plans to continue developing the Garrison Springs Community Forest property, a site with historical significance as a water source and recreational area. Existing structures, such as a house and barn, will be preserved, with the potential for the house to be converted into a nature center featuring an outdoor amphitheater.
The Ozark Board of Aldermen is expected to vote on adopting this ambitious plan at their meeting on June 15, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the city’s park system and ensuring that these valuable natural resources are accessible and protected for future generations.
