Residents of the Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 can light outdoor debris fires again beginning at sunrise on Oct. 1. The decision follows a joint assessment by Central Oregon fire agencies that recent cooler temperatures, recent precipitation and a moderate regional fire danger rating make burning safe.
Why the change now?
Fire officials monitor weather patterns and fuel conditions daily. This spring’s rain and the drop in temperature have reduced the amount of dry vegetation that fuels wildfires. With the regional fire danger level classified as moderate, the agencies concluded that a controlled opening of the burn schedule would not jeopardize public safety.
What’s allowed and what’s still prohibited?
While the rural fire protection district will permit debris burning, the city of Bend continues to enforce a permanent ban on outdoor debris fires within its limits. Open fires are also prohibited on public lands owned by the City of Bend, Deschutes County, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Campfires, recreational fires, warming fires and cooking fires remain permissible in both the city and surrounding rural areas, provided residents follow the safety guidelines set by Bend Fire & Rescue.
How to stay compliant
Before lighting any fire, residents should call the burning‑status hotline at 541‑322‑6335 to confirm that conditions remain favorable. Weather can shift quickly, and the hotline will provide real‑time updates or closures.
Permits are required for agricultural fires, special events such as bonfires or pit fires, and any fire larger than six feet in diameter. When preparing a burn site, a 10‑foot perimeter must be cleared of flammable material, and a water source, hose, or hand tools should be kept nearby in case the fire spreads.
After the fire is out, it must be fully extinguished and the ground should be cool to the touch before leaving the area. Failure to follow these regulations can result in a citation and may be reported to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
