OSU football kickoff delayed by storm north of Boone Pickens Stadium

Oklahoma State University announced Saturday morning that the highly anticipated matchup against the Oregon Ducks will not begin at the originally scheduled 12:15 p.m. kickoff. A storm system developing north of Stillwater prompted the university’s Emergency Management team to issue a delay, citing safety concerns for fans, players, and staff.

University response

In a social‑media post, officials from the OSU Police Department and Campus Safety wrote, “OSU Emergency Management is monitoring a storm north of Stillwater. Gates for Boone Pickens Stadium are open. Please be weather aware.” The statement emphasized that while the stadium gates remain open, the game’s start time will be adjusted once conditions improve.

Impact on fans and teams

Fans who arrived early to support the Cowboys were asked to remain patient as staff assess the storm’s trajectory. The university has assured that all ticket holders will retain entry once the game resumes, and that any further updates will be posted through official OSU channels.

Both coaching staffs were briefed on the delay. Head coach Mike Gundy of the Cowboys and Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning confirmed that the teams are using the extra time to review game plans and stay prepared for a safe kickoff.

Safety first

OSU’s Emergency Management team highlighted that the decision aligns with the university’s longstanding commitment to campus safety. The storm, characterized by heavy rain and gusty winds, poses a risk of reduced visibility and slippery conditions on the field and surrounding walkways.

“Our priority is the well‑being of our students, athletes, and community members,” the statement read. “We will continue to monitor the weather and provide timely updates.”

What’s next?

The university has not yet announced a revised kickoff time, but officials indicated that the game will likely resume later in the afternoon if the storm weakens. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to OSU’s official website, Twitter, and Facebook pages for real‑time information.

Local businesses near the stadium, including restaurants and hotels, were also advised to prepare for a possible shift in traffic patterns as fans adjust their schedules.

Community perspective

Stillwater residents expressed understanding of the precautionary measure, noting that the safety of the university community outweighs the inconvenience of a delayed start. Many highlighted the importance of supporting the Cowboys while respecting the university’s responsible approach to weather threats.

As the storm moves through the region, OSU remains committed to delivering a safe and exciting football experience for all who gather to cheer on the Cowboys.
