Over a year has passed since former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested, yet no trial date has been set for the charges he faces related to an alleged illegal gambling enterprise. Lopez, who maintains his innocence, is accused of racketeering and conspiracy, with prosecutors alleging his involvement in a gambling ring that generated over $21 million in illicit profits.
Allegations and Arrest
Statewide prosecutors claim that Lopez became involved with the gambling operation while campaigning for sheriff in 2019. After his election, he allegedly helped open an unlawful casino in Kissimmee and used his position to protect the enterprise from law enforcement scrutiny. Video evidence from Homeland Security Investigations showed Lopez wearing his badge during his arrest on June 5, 2025. Subsequently, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Lopez from his position.
During Lopez’s initial court appearance, statewide prosecutor Panagiota Papakos stated that Lopez received between $600,000 and $700,000 in cash payments from the illegal operation since 2020. Lopez, who was held in Lake County jail, was released on a $1 million bond after three weeks.
Co-defendants and Plea Deals
Three other individuals, Carol Cote, Sharon Federick, and Sheldon Wetherholt, were also arrested in connection with the case. Wetherholt was linked to the Eclipse Social Club in Kissimmee, which openly advertised its Vegas-style slot machines. Despite the charges, Wetherholt claimed no knowledge of Lopez.
Lopez’s estranged wife, Robin Severance-Lopez, was also arrested on conspiracy charges, though her attorney argues there is no probable cause for her involvement. Severance-Lopez was later accused of lying under oath about her finances during a bail hearing.
Prosecutors identified Krishna Deokaran as the mastermind behind the gambling enterprise. Although Deokaran was not charged with racketeering or conspiracy, he pleaded guilty to money laundering and is expected to testify against Lopez.
Awaiting Trial
Lopez’s trial remains pending, with his defense team still conducting depositions. If convicted, Lopez faces up to 30 years in prison. Despite the serious charges, Lopez has expressed confidence in his defense, looking forward to his day in court.
The case continues to unfold, with the community closely watching the developments surrounding the former sheriff and the allegations of corruption and illegal activities.
