Deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office met Irene Miller as she stepped off a flight at Orlando International Airport on Friday morning. Body‑camera footage shows officers escorting her through the terminal and placing her in handcuffs shortly after her arrival.
Children found alone at home
Earlier that evening, on October 21, a 911 call was placed by one of Miller’s children reporting that a dumbbell had fallen on her 9‑year‑old brother’s head. Responding deputies arrived at the family’s Kissimmee residence shortly after 8:30 p.m. and discovered four children—ages 9, 11, 12 and 14—without any adult present.
Fire‑rescue crews took the injured boy to Celebration Hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
Mother’s explanation and arrest
When contacted by a deputy, Miller explained that she was working in Las Vegas and had planned to return on October 23. Records show she left Florida on October 18 for the work trip. Miller told investigators she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to travel each morning to help the children get ready for school and to check on them afterward, but the sitter was not required to stay overnight.
Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the department will not tolerate child neglect. “These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children,” he said.
Legal action
Miller, 50, was arrested on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into the Orange County Jail. The children’s father was contacted and agreed to take all four children to his home while detectives arrange to meet Miller when her flight lands.
The incident underscores the importance of parental responsibility and the role of law‑enforcement in protecting vulnerable minors. Osceola County officials encourage parents to ensure that reliable adult supervision is in place whenever children are left home alone, especially overnight.
