Among the items discovered was a video cassette tape of a WESH 2 newscast from Friday, June 11, 1976. The capsule was buried by the Kiwanis Club of Orlando as part of the nation’s bicentennial celebration and remained sealed until today.
The capsule also preserved an American Revolution bicentennial sign, a city map from 1976, and a jar containing old audio tapes. A phone book that revealed Orlando had the area code ‘305’ in the mid-1970s was also found.
In 1976, Orlando’s population was approximately 116,000 residents. Today, the city is home to around 334,000 people.
