Orlando social worker and retired NYPD sergeant recalls 9/11 rescue moment

When the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001, a young NYPD sergeant named Nancy Rosado was among the first officers on the scene. Today, she lives in Orlando, Florida, working as a clinical social worker who has helped survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting. In a recent interview, Rosado reflected on a powerful moment that has stayed with her for a quarter‑century.

First‑hand account of the chaos

Rosado explained that she was stationed nearby when the attacks began. As the South Tower collapsed, she found herself confronting a man who was desperately searching for his wife and trying to reach the World Trade Center. “He was panicked, shouting for his wife,” Rosado recalled. “I could see the fear in his eyes and the danger all around us.”

Understanding the imminent risk, Rosado made a split‑second decision to intervene. She stopped the man from moving further into the collapsing area and redirected him to a safer location. “I told him we had to get out of there, that staying would only put him in more danger,” she said, her voice trembling as she remembered the scene.

Why the memory endures

Even after 25 years, the image remains vivid for Rosado. “It’s an image I visit every year,” she said, eyes welling with tears. “For 25 years, I’ve wondered, ‘What happened to him?'” The unanswered question underscores the lingering impact of that day on first responders and civilians alike.

Rosado’s story was captured in an NBC news clip from the day of the attacks, showing her calm yet urgent assistance to the man. The footage, now part of the historical record, highlights the bravery of ordinary citizens who stepped up when the nation needed them most.

Continuing service to the community

After retiring from the NYPD, Rosado moved to Orlando and dedicated her career to helping those who have suffered trauma. She became well‑known for her work with survivors of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, offering counseling and support to families still grieving.

Her experience on 9/11 informs her approach to trauma care. “When you see someone in crisis, you have to act quickly and compassionately,” she said. “That lesson never leaves you.”

Remembering the fallen

Each year, Rosado joins countless others in honoring the victims and first responders of 9/11. While the nation marks the tragedy with moments of silence and memorial events, personal stories like hers remind us of the individual acts of courage that defined that day.

Rosado hopes that sharing her memory will encourage others to recognize the value of service and the importance of looking out for one another, especially in moments of uncertainty.

Looking forward

As Orlando continues to grow, Rosado remains a steadfast presence in the community, offering both professional expertise and a living reminder of the resilience that emerged from one of America’s darkest hours.
