The city of Orlando has completed the relocation of all the swans from Lake Eola Park to a new sanctuary. This decision was made to prioritize the health and well-being of the birds, especially during an extended period of construction in the park.
Background
The swans have been a part of Lake Eola Park for over 100 years, with the first swans being introduced by Charles Lord in 1893. However, after a winter avian flu outbreak that killed at least 29 birds, the city decided to rehome the swans.
City Commissioner Patty Sheehan confirmed that the pause in the swan program was directly related to the avian flu outbreak and expressed hope that the program could continue in the future when it’s safer for the swans.
