Orion180 Insurance raises $240 million in US IPO, pricing below range

Orion180 Insurance, headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, completed its initial public offering on Thursday, raising $240 million by selling 20 million shares at $12 per share. The price fell short of the company’s indicated range of $15 to $17, but the capital raise still marks a significant milestone for the young insurer.

Company background and market reach

Founded in 2018 by Kenneth Gregg, Orion180 provides excess and surplus lines homeowners insurance across 14 states, with key markets in Texas, California and Florida. The firm’s growth strategy relies on a technology‑driven underwriting platform that it says delivers lower‑than‑average loss ratios.

Industry context

The IPO comes as a wave of insurance listings tests investor appetite during the fall season. CVC‑backed Bamboo Insurance has launched its roadshow seeking up to $700 million, while Hellman & Friedman‑backed Hub International filed confidential paperwork in June. Analysts note that insurers are benefitting from a rebound in capital markets after earlier macroeconomic headwinds.

“Both Orion180 and Bamboo cite lower‑than‑average loss ratios on policies, driven by their underwriting platforms; both are also growing quickly, which should appeal to investors,” said Nicholas Einhorn, vice president of research at Renaissance Capital, a provider of IPO‑focused research and ETFs.

Einhorn added that investors have become more diligent in evaluating insurance IPOs, often requiring companies to prove their business models after going public.

Deal structure and market debut

RBC Capital Markets, UBS Investment Bank and Raymond James acted as lead book‑running managers for the offering. Orion180 is slated to begin trading on the Nasdaq on Friday under the ticker symbol “OIG.”

Implications for the local economy

The successful raise, even at a price below the target range, provides Orion180 with additional capital to expand its underwriting capabilities and deepen its presence in high‑growth states. The influx of funds is expected to support hiring, technology investments, and the development of new insurance products tailored to homeowners facing increasing climate‑related risks.

Local officials in Brevard County have welcomed the news, noting that a thriving insurance sector can bolster the region’s reputation as a hub for financial services and create well‑paying jobs for residents.

Looking ahead

As the fall IPO season progresses, market participants will watch Orion180’s post‑listing performance closely. The company’s ability to maintain its loss‑ratio advantage and deliver growth could set a benchmark for other insurers seeking public capital.

Investors and analysts will also monitor how the broader insurance market responds to shifting risk landscapes, including the impacts of extreme weather events and evolving regulatory requirements.
