Oregon State Shows Promise in Week 1 Loss to Houston

Oregon State University opened its 2026 football season on the road in Houston, facing a tough test against the Cougars in head coach JaMarcus Shephard’s first game at the helm. While the Beavers trailed early, they demonstrated grit and flashes of potential that give fans reason for optimism.

Early dominance by Houston

The Cougars set the tone from the opening kickoff, building a 19‑7 lead by halftime. Their balanced attack kept the Beavers on the defensive, and a second‑half surge extended the margin to 26‑7.

Beavers rally with big plays

Refusing to surrender, Oregon State answered with two explosive touchdown drives—an 89‑yard march followed by a 75‑yard strike—that trimmed the deficit to six points. Quarterback Braeden Atkinson, who finished with 376 passing yards and a touchdown through the air, led the comeback and earned praise from Coach Shephard for his leadership on the field.

Houston seals the win

Despite the Beavers’ surge, Houston remained composed, scoring another touchdown late in the fourth quarter to secure a 33‑27 victory. The loss ends Oregon State’s season with a 0‑1 record, but the performance offers several positive takeaways.

Coach Shephard’s perspective

“I’m very proud of our football team and how they fought through every part of that,” Shephard said after the game. “We grew today as a football team. I just want to say congratulations to the University of Houston. They made some plays in critical moments of the game that allowed them to truly come out with the win.”

Shephard also emphasized that a single loss will not define the program. “Fifty percent of the teams across college football lost a football game over this weekend, and that’s what we were—one of them. I don’t think this particular game will define our football team. It’ll just give us an opportunity to look at the information and build on that.”

He added, “We created some opportunities for ourselves throughout the game and put ourselves in some good positions to come out with the victory. But we have to just be better at closing out the football game.”

Looking ahead

The Beavers return home with valuable experience and a clear roadmap for improvement. With Atkinson’s poise and Shephard’s confidence in his squad, Oregon State aims to translate the flashes of brilliance from this opener into consistent success throughout the season.

Fans can expect the next home contest later this month, where the team will look to turn the lessons learned in Houston into a winning performance on campus.
