Oregon committee to evaluate $17 million in outdoor recreation grant applications

The Oregon Local Government Grant Program Advisory Committee is set to convene virtually from September 29 through October 1 to review 43 applications that together seek a portion of about $17 million in state lottery‑derived funding for outdoor recreation projects.

Program background

Created in 1999, the Local Government Grant Program channels lottery revenue to eligible cities, counties, park districts, port districts, and other entities for the acquisition, development, or rehabilitation of parks and recreation facilities. The program is administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and coordinated by Jennifer Dimsho.

Committee composition and process

The ten‑member advisory committee reflects a cross‑section of Oregon’s regions and stakeholder groups, including representatives from municipalities, counties, park and recreation districts, port districts, people with disabilities, and members of the general public. During the three‑day meeting, each applicant will give a brief presentation of its proposed project. Committee members will then score the submissions, creating a priority ranking list of projects recommended for funding.

Although the meeting will be open to the public via Zoom, no time has been set aside for public comment. All meeting details, agendas, and the list of project proposals are available online for anyone who wishes to follow the process.

Next steps

Once the advisory committee finalizes its ranking, the list will be forwarded to the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission for final review and approval. Projects that make the commission’s approved list will receive grant awards from the $17 million pool, supporting outdoor recreation improvements across the state.

Why it matters to Oregon families

These grants aim to enhance community parks, trails, and recreation facilities that families rely on for healthy, active lifestyles. By investing state lottery dollars back into local outdoor spaces, the program supports the traditional family value of spending quality time together in nature while also promoting stewardship of Oregon’s natural resources.

Local officials and community leaders are encouraged to monitor the outcomes of the funded projects, as successful initiatives can serve as models for future grant cycles and demonstrate the positive impact of state‑level support for recreation infrastructure.
