Orban Re-Elected as Fidesz Party Leader

Viktor Orban, the former Prime Minister of Hungary, has been re-elected as the leader of the Fidesz party. This comes despite the party’s loss of power in the April 12 election to the centre-right Tisza party.

Orban’s Re-Election

Orban, a conservative activist, has been a key figure in Hungarian politics for many years. He has provided inspiration for right-wing conservatives across Europe and the United States with his vision for an ‘illiberal’ model of democracy.

At the Fidesz party congress, 729 delegates out of 737 voted to re-elect Orban. He told the congress that he took full responsibility for the party’s election defeat and emphasized the need for the party to undergo changes to become a functional opposition party.

The Tisza party, led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar, won a two-thirds parliamentary majority in the April election. This majority is enough to reverse Orban’s constitutional changes. Since the election, Fidesz has lost support, with a May survey showing Tisza with 55% support and Fidesz with 17%.
