Orange County schools are moving forward with a new e-bike policy ahead of the back-to-school season. The policy, which was approved by the school board last week, prohibits elementary and middle school students from bringing or using motorized micromobility devices, such as e-bikes or e-scooters, on school property.

High School Students Allowed with Restrictions

However, high school students with a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit will be allowed to bring these devices on school property, but they must register them first and obtain a school-issued decal. The district is currently developing the e-bike registration process and working with law enforcement to determine how the new policy will be enforced.

The new policy comes with a grace period, and enforcement will not begin until September 8, after Labor Day. According to Stephanie Vanos, the board member for District 6, the discussion about the policy has been months in the making, with the primary concern being the safety of students and the community.
