Orange County judge sets $160,000 bond for suspended Palm Beach clerk Michael Caruso

Orange County, Fla. – A judge in Orange County on Friday approved a $160,000 bond for Michael Caruso, the suspended Palm Beach County Clerk accused of repeatedly molesting a young child. Caruso, a former state legislator, was released from jail after the court determined he could meet the bond conditions.

Background of the allegations

Prosecutors allege that Caruso sexually abused the child on at least two occasions: once in November 2024 and again during a cruise ship trip a year later. The child’s family resides in Orange County, and court filings indicate the child would have been about three years old at the time of the first alleged incident.

Court testimony and challenges

During the hearing, a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) agent testified about additional accusations from individuals connected to Caruso’s family that date back several years. When asked whether the child victim had given a name to the alleged abuse, the agent responded, “I believe it was Ticklemonster, I believe.”

Prosecutors also referenced prior allegations of similar conduct against Caruso. Caruso’s attorney, however, pressed the agent on the credibility of those claims, receiving confirmation that no concrete proof of the incidents exists. “Were they reported anywhere?” the lawyer asked. The agent replied, “I believe there were some DCF reports that were unfounded.” The lawyer repeated the word “unfounded,” emphasizing the lack of substantiation.

Bond conditions

The judge set several conditions alongside the bond amount. Caruso must surrender his passport, refrain from any contact with the alleged victim, and is prohibited from returning to Orange County except for required court appearances. Violating any of these conditions could result in the bond being revoked and Caruso being taken back into custody.

Legal context and next steps

Caruso remains suspended from his clerk duties while the criminal case proceeds. The bond hearing focused largely on whether Caruso posed a flight risk or a danger to the community, rather than determining guilt. The next court date has not been scheduled publicly, but the case is expected to move forward as prosecutors continue their investigation.

Community reaction

Local residents expressed a mix of concern and curiosity about the high‑profile case involving a former state lawmaker. While some community members emphasized the importance of due process, others voiced frustration that a public official accused of such serious wrongdoing could be released pending trial.

The Orange County judge’s decision reflects the court’s balancing act between protecting the alleged victim and upholding the legal rights of the accused. As the case unfolds, both the Palm Beach and Orange County communities will be watching closely for further developments.
