OpenAI launches ChatGPT ads, offering brands a new trusted AI marketplace

At the start of 2026 OpenAI rolled out a beta program that places advertising inside ChatGPT. The move follows a broader shift in how people search for information: instead of typing short keyword strings, users now ask artificial‑intelligence assistants full‑sentence questions and expect a concise, trustworthy answer.

Why the change matters for families and businesses

Hundreds of millions of Americans rely on ChatGPT for everyday tasks—from checking homework to comparing product features before a purchase. By inserting ads next to those conversations, OpenAI creates a new revenue stream that does not require every user to pay a subscription fee. The company says the sponsored messages will remain clearly labeled and separate from the assistant’s responses, preserving the trust that users place in the answers.

How the ad system works

Unlike traditional keyword‑based search ads, OpenAI’s platform evaluates the context and intent of the ongoing conversation before selecting a paid message. David Dugan, OpenAI’s head of global ads solutions, explained at Cannes Lions that the format “is not a keyword‑based buy, so it’s different from traditional search.” Advertisers must therefore craft campaigns that signal relevance through contextual hints and well‑structured landing pages, while the AI determines whether the ad fits the dialogue.

Implications for marketers

Marketers are already adapting to what industry analysts call “generative engine optimization” (GEO). By providing accurate product information, clear specifications, and authentic customer reviews, brands increase the likelihood that the AI will surface their offerings organically, even without paying for placement. When a brand does appear organically, the conversation can quickly move from research to purchase, with some eligible products even supporting checkout directly inside ChatGPT.

According to McKinsey, half of surveyed shoppers now seek AI‑powered search on purpose, and a single written response can replace a full page of links. This concentration means that if an AI assistant cannot clearly identify a brand, that brand may never enter the consumer’s consideration set.

Balancing growth with user experience

OpenAI acknowledges that advertising must not undermine the assistant’s reliability. E‑marketer analyst Jeremy Goldman warned that users could migrate to rival chatbots if ads feel “clumsy or opportunistic.” In response, OpenAI has pledged to keep sponsored messages separate from answers and to continue testing relevance safeguards throughout the pilot.

Competing AI firms remain cautious, emphasizing trust and accuracy over immediate commercial gain. Nonetheless, the industry expects AI search to play an ever‑larger role in buying decisions, putting pressure on brands to maintain accurate, up‑to‑date information.

What businesses should do now

Brands looking to experiment with ChatGPT ads should start with small, measured campaigns and track performance closely. Reliable attribution—linking early ad interactions to later sales—will be essential for determining how much of a company’s customer acquisition budget should flow to this new channel versus traditional platforms.

As the pilot expands, marketers who combine paid placement with strong organic AI visibility will be best positioned to capture sales without sacrificing the trusted experience that users expect from their digital assistants.
