Late Friday night, a tragic traffic accident on Interstate 95 northbound near Gray, Maine, left one person dead and three others injured. According to Maine State Police, troopers arrived on the scene just after 11:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a severe crash.
What happened
Police say a Honda traveling north on I‑95 encountered a deer that leapt onto the roadway. The driver swerved sharply to avoid the animal, causing the vehicle to strike a median side guardrail and spin 180 degrees. A Chevrolet traveling in the opposite direction then collided head‑on with the Honda.
The impact fatally wounded the Honda passenger, identified as 38‑year‑old Soda Mao of Auburn, who died at the scene. The Honda driver was taken to Maine Medical Center with non‑life‑threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Traffic impact
The crash forced a full shutdown of the affected lane for about 20 minutes while emergency crews cleared the wreckage. After the lane reopened, one side of the turnpike remained closed for roughly two more hours, causing delays for commuters traveling through the area.
Investigation
The incident remains under investigation by Maine State Police. Authorities have not released further details regarding the cause of the deer’s presence on the highway or any potential contributing factors beyond the driver’s evasive maneuver.
Safety reminder
Motorists traveling on rural highways are urged to remain vigilant for wildlife, especially during dusk and nighttime hours when deer are most active. Maintaining a safe speed and being prepared to brake gently can help avoid sudden swerves that lead to severe accidents.
