Police in Dover, Delaware are investigating a deadly double shooting that occurred Saturday night near Delaware State University. The incident took place at about 9:19 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dover Commons shopping center, located in the 1200 block of North Dupont Highway.
Homecoming crowds created a chaotic backdrop
Earlier that day, thousands of students and visitors attended Delaware State University’s homecoming celebrations. Campus officials required attendees to leave the university grounds by approximately 6 p.m., prompting large crowds to spill over into nearby shopping centers and other gathering spots.
At the time of the shooting, more than 50 officers from multiple law‑enforcement agencies were already on the scene to manage the crowds and respond to a series of disturbances, including fights, disorderly conduct and reports of shots fired at several locations.
Victims identified and response
Officers first located a 21‑year‑old male with a gunshot wound to his upper body. While providing aid to that victim, they discovered a second victim, identified as 22‑year‑old Nasir Cox of Philadelphia.
The Route 13 corridor that runs between Delaware State University and the surrounding shopping centers was completely gridlocked with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The congestion delayed emergency medical services, prompting officers to transport the victims themselves to the nearest hospital.
At the hospital, Mr. Cox succumbed to his injuries. The 21‑year‑old survivor remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Police ask for community help
Detectives continue to investigate the motive and any possible connections to the earlier disturbances. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Dover police.
The incident underscores the challenges that large public events can pose for public safety officials. Dover law‑enforcement agencies remain committed to protecting residents and visitors while maintaining order during high‑traffic gatherings.
