On Tuesday, Omaha City Council approved a proclamation that designates November as Ra’Miyah Worthington and Child Safety Month. The measure, introduced by Councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin, commemorates the 1‑year‑old who died three years ago after being left inside a daycare van on a hot day.
Proclamation aims to prevent future tragedies
Goodwin emphasized that caregivers and transportation providers must “strictly enforce loading, unloading, headcount and vehicle check protocols to prevent vehicular heat stroke and fatal abandonment.” The council’s resolution calls for heightened awareness and training for anyone responsible for moving children, from daycare operators to school bus drivers.
Family finds solace in community support
Ra’Miyah’s parents, Reeyon and Ryan Worthington, said the proclamation offers a measure of comfort, though it cannot replace their lost daughter. “It’s been a lot for us. It still continues to be a lot,” Reeyon said, describing how everyday moments—dropping kids off at school, seeing daycare events—can trigger painful memories. The family highlighted the support of neighbors, especially community activist Sherman Wells, who helped them navigate the grief.
Driver sentenced, but families seek lasting change
The driver of the van, Ryan Williams, received four years of probation for his role in the fatal incident. While the Worthingtons acknowledge the legal outcome, they stress that the real goal is to save other children. “We’re hoping that our situation helps others to really pay attention to the children and take their jobs more seriously,” Reeyon said.
Council’s next steps
The proclamation will be displayed in city buildings throughout November, and the council plans to partner with local child‑care providers to host safety workshops. Goodwin urged parents, teachers, and caregivers to attend, noting that collective vigilance can prevent another heartbreaking loss.
Community members are encouraged to share their own safety tips on the city’s website and to volunteer with local organizations that focus on child‑well‑being. The council hopes the month-long focus will embed stronger safety habits into everyday practice across Omaha.
