Olivia Rodrigo’s Irvine benefit festival raises $20 million for women’s health and family‑focused nonprofits

On Saturday, Irvine’s Orange County Fairgrounds hosted the Daisy Chain Fields benefit festival, a women‑led concert organized by pop star Olivia Rodrigo. The event featured performers Chappell Roan, Doechii and the pioneering riot‑grrrl band Bikini Kill, and it raised a total of $20 million for ten nonprofit partners that focus on women’s health, workplace protections and legal rights.

Fundraising impact

Rodrigo announced that the festival had already secured a $10 million donation to each of the ten selected nonprofits, including Planned Parenthood, the National Women’s Law Center and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Philanthropist Melinda French Gates matched the amount with a surprise $10 million pledge from her Pivotal Ventures, calling Rodrigo “a force” for showing young people that their voices matter.

Local families and intergenerational participation

Attendees ranged from teenagers to parents bringing children. Melissa Shaw, a 33‑year‑old mother from Tucson, drove to Irvine with her 8‑year‑old daughter to explore the “philanthropy village” where each nonprofit displayed information booths and collectible pins. Shaw said the experience reinforced her desire to expose her child to public figures who champion family‑friendly values.

Orange County resident Grace Slevin, 24, described the festival as a chance to “be who you needed when you were younger.” She highlighted the event’s blend of music and activism, noting that the festival’s atmosphere felt authentic rather than a token gesture.

Nonprofit partners benefit from flexible grants

All ten organizations received general operating support, allowing them to allocate funds where they see greatest need. Black Mamas Matter Alliance co‑founder Angela Doyinsola Aina explained that unrestricted funding is the hardest to secure but the most useful for sustaining training, advocacy and community outreach.

Uma Iyer, chief external affairs officer for the National Women’s Law Center, said the grant will help plug budgetary gaps as the group continues to litigate sex‑discrimination cases, boosting staff morale and capacity.

Context of federal policy

The festival’s focus on reproductive health comes as President Trump’s administration works to restore family‑planning grants that were paused last year. The administration had temporarily halted $27.5 million for clinics, including Planned Parenthood affiliates, before agreeing to reinstate the funds.

Planned Parenthood’s national director of arts and entertainment, Caren Spruch, noted that events like Daisy Chain Fields are vital for normalizing conversations about reproductive health and rights, especially as many clinics face closures in restrictive states.

Legacy and inspiration

Rodrigo cited the 1990s Lilith Fair as a model, recalling how that all‑women festival raised $10 million for charity and proved that women could headline consecutive shows. Sarah McLachlan, founder of Lilith Fair, appeared as a special guest, linking past and present efforts to empower women through music.

Festival organizers emphasized that the event was designed to attract multiple generations, fostering intergenerational connections that can sustain advocacy for women’s well‑being for years to come.
