QUAY COUNTY, N.M. – A grass blaze has blackened an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 acres in the vicinity of San Jon, officials say.
Authorities report the Old 66 Fire is posing a threat to nearby structures and remains 0% contained at this time.
The New Mexico Forestry Division says crews located the fire at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, east of San Jon and north of Interstate 40 in Quay County.
Smoke from the incident is visible from Interstate 40 and the surrounding area.
The incident is occurring on private property, and investigators are still determining how the fire started.
State Road 469 is closed at Main Avenue; officials urge locals to exercise caution and steer clear of the area.
Among the structures at risk is a wind farm located to the southwest.
